Summary
The Global Migration Lab powered by the Australian Red Cross was an interactive panel discussion aimed at strengthening policies that would ensure access to basic services for all migrants during the COVID-19 pandemic. By bringing together key organizations currently researching new and existing vulnerabilities faced by migrants with global practitioners and policymakers, the event sought to encourage connection and coherence at the global, regional, and national levels in addressing inequity in access to basic services.

By bringing together key organizations undertaking research on the impacts of COVID-19 on migrants with global practitioners and policymakers, the event sought to encourage connection and coherence at the global, regional, and national levels in addressing inequity in access to basic services.

How did we do it?
To start, KUDO was able to offer a one-stop-shop for this event – from sourcing and engaging quality interpreters across four languages, to providing technical support to ensure both key panelists and audience members alike had a positive experience and smooth connection, to providing important post-event analytics enabling event coordinators to measure the event’s reach and inform future operations. By using KUDO, they were able to ensure a more inclusive and truly global event that brought together a range of speakers and participants and facilitated a diverse level of engagement and representation.
The event was hosted online using KUDO’s virtual platform which enabled more than 100 participants across 48 different countries to join. Simultaneous interpretation was provided in English, French, Spanish, and Arabic to enable participants to listen and contribute in their own language, creating scope for a more interactive discussion and dialogue and a wider reach to a global audience.
Removing language barriers and obstacles
A major obstacle for this event was time. As the theme was centered around the COVID-19 pandemic, there wasn’t a great deal of time allotted to plan the event. Factoring in travel, gathering restrictions, and the ever-changing variants of the virus made working against the clock even more difficult. Luckily, KUDO stepped in early in the process to help in more ways than expected.
KUDO not only offered an efficient service for event planning, coordination and logistics and saved time by taking the lead in the behind-the-scenes work, we also helped design and realize a more inclusive event and offered an opportunity to promote research findings to a wider audience, expanding the potential impact of any discussions. By removing language barriers through seamless simultaneous interpretation, a greater range of policymakers, researchers and practitioners were able to connect.
Participation
KUDO live interpretation enabled a globally inclusive event. Attendees accessed all 4 languages provided and were able to participate freely in their preferred language.
What is the global migration lab?
The Global Migration Lab seeks to ensure that the voices, expertise, and experience of migrants and the communities in which they live, and work are amplified to guide and inform policy and operations and that research on migration builds on evidence from people directly affected. Projects aim to provide partners, governments, and the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement with recommendations and insights to influence the structural factors that have given rise to vulnerabilities experienced by migrant groups across the world.
